Identification
Broad, bright orange margins on the rear dorsal, tail and anal fins are important identifying features. The head is relatively wide. Compared with most related redeye basses, it also has larger scales and fewer scales along the lateral line. Some characters overlap with Tallapoosa bass, so a single scale count does not settle every identification.
Names and range
Older redeye bass records may predate the recognition of Micropterus chattahoochae. Checking the drainage and the date of an account helps determine whether an older name refers to this species. Its native-range description is tied to a particular river system, not to every stream in Georgia.
