Stream habitat
Within its small native range, the species occupies clear, clean, well-oxygenated streams and rivers. Vegetation along stream banks is part of the habitat described by Alabama Cooperative Extension. Its distribution is tied to the Cahaba drainage, so a redeye-like bass from another Alabama basin may belong to a different species.

Species identity
The scientific name Micropterus cahabae was established in a 2013 revision of the redeye bass group. Older fishing accounts often retain the collective name redeye bass. Drainage information helps interpret those records, while identification of an individual still benefits from photographs and the characters used in the original revision.
