About Summer Sucker

The summer sucker is restricted to New York’s Adirondack region, in the St. Lawrence and Hudson drainages. Its breeding schedule gives the common name particular relevance.

Range and natural history

Adults occupy upland lakes and streams. Spawning extends from early summer into late July or early August, often in temporary streams. Arrival at those streams is episodic and associated with rain and suitable flow; the reviewed account finds temperature a less important cue than in some related suckers.

Maturing males develop a gold side stripe, small golden marks above the eyes and abundant breeding tubercles. Females remain drabber but also develop tubercles. Both sexes begin reaching maturity at around four years. The source notes disappearance from the original collection localities, a reason to distinguish historical records from current occupancy.
