A name formerly used for a subspecies
ITIS recognizes the species as valid and lists Lepomis megalotis aquilensis among its synonyms. Texas State University’s inland-fish index uses Plains Longear Sunfish for the same scientific name. A change in common name does not itself indicate a different biological species.

Appearance and stream habitat
The field guide describes mature fish with a long, thick ear flap edged in pale pink or white, blue streaks across the upper lip, and blue markings on the cheek and gill cover. Color and pattern are highly variable; blue spotting may form a network or become less conspicuous against orange and pale blue areas.
These clues help recognize a longear-type sunfish, but do not reliably separate every aquilensis from megalotis. The guide warns that overlapping and genetically mixed populations can resist confident visual identification.
Reported habitat includes calm pools and quieter creek and river sections over rock or sand, often near fallen wood, root masses, or undercut banks. Breeding males can become brighter orange or red with stronger blue iridescence. Outside breeding condition, color alone is a weak way to determine sex.

Using older biological accounts
The Fishes of Texas page preserves distribution and life-history material assembled under a broader concept of Lepomis megalotis. Some cited studies even concern other named members of the complex. Those older accounts remain useful research leads, but their full continental range, breeding details, or growth measurements cannot automatically be assigned to the narrower aquilensis entry.
For an identification or locality record, retain the drainage and the scientific name supplied by the original source. This is especially useful when comparing an older longear record with a modern species-level identification.
