About Redear Herring

The redear herring is a coastal western Atlantic fish of Bermuda, Florida, the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Guianas.

Range and natural history

It often occurs close to shore and over clear coral reefs. Large schools can gather near beaches above turtle-grass beds. These observations place it in several shallow coastal settings rather than restricting it to a single type of reef.

FishBase also records it in polluted areas; that observation does not mean all degraded water is suitable habitat. The account notes a lack of confirmed Brazilian specimens in a major museum collection. Range statements extending well south of the Guianas therefore deserve checking against identified material.
