About Florida Round Herring

Florida round herring is a small schooling fish reported from Florida, Belize and Venezuela. It usually occurs inshore and is associated with marine reef waters, with records extending to 50 m.

Appearance

A silver band runs along the side without narrowing or fading toward the head. Technical identification also uses the toothed upper jaw, a single supramaxillary bone and a W-shaped pelvic scute. These characters help separate it from similar small schooling clupeoid fishes.

Feeding and size

It feeds on plankton. FishBase suggests a size of about 5–6 cm standard length, which excludes the tail fin; the estimate is presented as probable rather than a firmly established maximum. A school’s bright lateral flashes are conspicuous, but species identification needs a closer view.
