Range and natural history
It occupies larger rivers and the lower reaches of major tributaries below the Fall Line. Water may be moderately clear or turbid, with moderate to strong current flowing over mixtures of gravel, sand and silt. This is a flowing-river fish rather than a species characterized by still ponds.
It was described as a distinct species in 2017 during revision of the Macrhybopsis aestivalis complex. In part of the Cahaba River it occurs alongside Macrhybopsis etnieri; the cited study found no evidence of hybridization there. Locality and formal diagnostic characters matter when distinguishing these similar chubs.
