About Gulf Chub

Gulf chub is a freshwater fish of Gulf Coast river systems in Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. Its named range includes the Pearl and Pascagoula drainages, with occurrence in the neighboring Lake Pontchartrain system treated more cautiously in the source.

Large-river habitat

It inhabits moderately clear to turbid large rivers and the lowest portions of major tributaries. This setting differs from the clear upland streams occupied by some related Macrhybopsis species. Its elongated body has eight dorsal-fin rays and usually seven to nine anal-fin rays in the summary.

Taxonomic history

Macrhybopsis tomellerii was described in a 2017 revision of the speckled chub complex. Older accounts using a broader species name may combine several fishes now treated separately. Drainage information is especially helpful when interpreting those historical records.
