About Coosa Chub

Coosa chub is a freshwater fish of the upper Mobile Bay basin, including the Cahaba, Coosa and Tallapoosa river systems. Its native range spans Alabama, northwestern Georgia and a small part of southeastern Tennessee.

Flowing-water habitat

It inhabits clear, moderately large streams above the Fall Line, using bottoms of sand, gravel or fine rubble. This upland distribution distinguishes its setting from lower, more turbid coastal-plain rivers used by some related chubs.

Species recognition

Macrhybopsis etnieri was described in a 2017 revision of the speckled chub complex. The elongated fish has seven or eight rays in each of the dorsal and anal fins in the cited summary. Older records under the broader complex name should be checked against drainage and the revised identification criteria.
