A changing river system
Research published with a 2025 population-genetics dataset describes loss of the fish from much of the main river and expansion upstream into tributaries. Accelerated erosion, channel incision and channel evolution have altered its habitat. These processes reflect both landscape modification and the changing course of the Mississippi River.
Connected populations
The study examined whether movement into tributaries was fragmenting populations and affecting gene flow. This is a useful distinction: a fish appearing farther upstream does not necessarily mean that its overall habitat or population is expanding. The project sampled genetic variation across the contemporary range to investigate that question.
