Range and natural history

A 2026 study examined contact between plains darters and orangebelly-darter relatives in Oklahoma’s Blue and Washita river drainages. The researchers also collected plains darters from Salado Creek in the Brazos drainage of Texas. These documented localities connect the species with streams of the southern Great Plains.

The study investigated how temperature affects competition where related darters meet. Its collection records concern wild locations; the food and temperature used to maintain fish in laboratory tanks should not be mistaken for a complete description of the wild diet or preferred temperature.
