Creek habitat
The South Carolina species account places this form in headwater creeks and Fall Line streams with gravel and rubble. Abundant populations can be separated by stretches where the fish is less common. The Savannah drainage is central to interpreting its range; the related Altamaha and Ogeechee fish are treated separately when the complex is split.

Taxonomic context
South Carolina’s 2025 wildlife plan notes that recognition of Hanukkah darter as a separate species is not universal. It continues to discuss the Savannah form within Christmas darter pending broader acceptance. The two names therefore reflect differing taxonomic treatments rather than two unrelated fishes sharing a holiday-themed common name.
