About Southern Tidewater Goby

The southern tidewater goby is a small coastal-lagoon fish of southern California. It was formally separated from the northern tidewater goby in 2016.

Range and natural history

The original description places verified southern records from Aliso Creek in Orange County to Agua Hedionda Lagoon in San Diego County. Its habitat consists of coastal lagoons, where closure and ponding produce conditions different from a permanently open tidal inlet.

Adults differ from northern tidewater gobies in head sensory structures, fin-ray counts and body proportions. In particular, the southern species lacks an anterior portion of the head’s sensory canal system and has more exposed neuromasts. The 2016 authors identified lagoon loss, drying and conversion to open tidal systems as threats. Their report of only three occupied sites describes that study period, rather than a current population census.
