Appearance
Two dark marks separated by a pale area create a lyre-like pattern at the tail base. The tail fin is large and bluntly pointed, and the mouth is small and directed downward. Several front dorsal spines become elongated in adults, particularly males.

Muddy-water habitat
It occupies muddy backwaters of bays and estuaries, including degraded or stagnant-looking waters, and also occurs over mud in freshwater. FishBase identifies it as a bottom spawner. Its tolerance of such habitats does not mean that every small goby in a muddy creek is this species; the tail-base marking and head characters remain useful.
