Range and natural history
It uses several sheltered coastal habitats: tide pools, mangrove margins and seagrass beds. Around mangroves it can occur over mud near the roots; elsewhere rock and turtle grass provide habitat. Its body may carry scattered dark blotches, sometimes loosely arranged in a series along the sides.
Color pattern alone is unreliable because the blotches are variable. Published identification characters include pectoral-fin ray counts, scale rows, jaw proportions and how far the scales extend forward on the head. Those details help distinguish it from other small gobies sharing the same shoreline.
