Additional field notes
Neon goby is a small reef-associated fish with a bright blue stripe over a dark body. Its distinctive color pattern is useful, but closely related striped gobies still require comparison.

Field identification notes
The stripe begins just in front of the eyes and runs nearly to the end of the tail. It does not join across the snout, and there is no pale gray band separating it from the dark back. The mouth lies below an overhanging snout. The Smithsonian account gives a maximum length of five centimeters.

Habitat and range notes
Coral heads and rock surfaces are characteristic habitat, and the fish is sometimes found on the outside of large sponges. The regional account lists depths of one to 40 meters and a range from Georgia to the Gulf of Mexico.

Feeding and life-history notes
The Smithsonian classifies it as an ectoparasite cleaner, recording parasites as food. It also warns that Elacatinus lobeli is very similar. The blue stripe should therefore be read as part of a pattern involving the snout and adjacent dark areas, rather than as a unique identification on its own.
