About Cocos Frillfin Goby

Cocos frillfin goby is a shallow Indo-Pacific reef fish ranging from eastern Africa to central Pacific islands. It lives on the bottom among rubble, reef rock and pockets of sand, and can be abundant on silty intertidal reef flats.

Appearance

The mottled brown body carries alternating pale and dark patches along its back and rectangular brown marks lower on the sides. White markings cover parts of the cheek and gill cover. The head is broad and flattened, and the tail fin is rounded. Free tips on the upper pectoral-fin rays contribute to the frillfin appearance.

Food and range

Recorded gut contents include marine worms, isopods, amphipods and crabs. Most observations are in the upper few metres, although records extend to 10 m. FishBase notes that Hawaiian examples were previously misidentified as Bathygobius fuscus, so older local records require attention to the scientific name used.
