Range and natural history
Its recorded range reaches from northern western Atlantic waters through the Caribbean to southern Brazil. FishBase lists occurrence from about 24 to 370 meters, with 50–250 meters more typical. The large eyes nearly reach the upper outline of the head, a useful feature when comparing similar snappers.
It feeds mainly on small fish. The fins are generally translucent or pinkish, with yellowish outer portions on the dorsal and tail fins. Although marketed as food, a catch record should be tied to the scientific name because common names of deep-water snappers can vary by region.
