About Big-eye Anchovy

Big-eye anchovy is a coastal schooling fish of the tropical western Atlantic. Its recorded range includes southern Florida, the Bahamas, the Antilles and waters from the Yucatán region to Venezuela and the Guianas. FishBase specifically excludes the Gulf of Mexico from that range.

Identification

A silvery stripe runs along the flank beneath a narrow dark line. The stripe broadens above the anal fin. The pointed snout is shorter than the eye diameter, while the long upper jaw reaches well back toward the gill cover. Its body is compressed rather than round in cross-section.

Schooling and food

Dense schools feed on zooplankton in coastal waters to about 50 m. Around Miami, big-eye anchovies can mix with bay anchovies. Lagoon use varies by locality: they are prominent inside and outside lagoons in Venezuela’s Los Roques archipelago, while the source does not report them entering mangrove-lined lagoons on the adjacent mainland.
