About Sailor Flyingfish

The sailor flyingfish is an ocean-surface fish that can leave the water and glide above it. Its distribution spans much of the Indo-Pacific and includes eastern Pacific records off Central America.

NativeSalt

Range and natural history

It uses open ocean surface waters. FishBase lists an Indo-West Pacific range from East Africa to Samoa, while noting absences from the Red Sea, Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf. It may also be absent from some enclosed seas of southeastern Asia.

Gliding is a useful behavioral clue to the flyingfish family, but it does not by itself establish this species. Identification requires a close look at fin and body characters. An observation offshore should therefore be paired with photographs or a diagnostic description when a species-level record is important.
