About Atlantic Blackwing Flyingfish

Atlantic blackwing flyingfish is an open-water Atlantic species with very long, dark pectoral fins. Its documented western range includes the United States Atlantic coast, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Confirmed eastern Atlantic records include Portugal, the Azores and the Canary Islands.

Appearance

The elongated body is almost flat underneath and angular in cross-section. Adults are dark above and pale below. Their black pectoral fins have a narrow pale outer edge and lack an unpigmented band across the middle. Juveniles can show dark bars across the body and mottled fins, making adult color descriptions less useful for very small fish.

Life near the surface

FishBase classifies this flyingfish as oceanic and pelagic. It feeds on zooplankton and produces eggs associated with the bottom. The source cautions that some far-eastern Atlantic reports may concern a similar species, Hirundichthys rondeletti. Location alone therefore cannot resolve an uncertain identification.
