About Tidewater Mojarra

The tidewater mojarra is an estuarine western Atlantic fish recorded from Bermuda and the Chesapeake region to southeastern Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean islands.

Range and natural history

It uses seagrass beds, mangrove areas and open sand or mud bottoms. It also enters freshwater tributaries. These habitats connect sheltered coastal vegetation with the soft bottoms where it searches for food.

Bottom-dwelling invertebrates are its principal recorded prey. FishBase reports a maximum total length of about 16 centimeters in the cited material, making it a relatively small coastal fish.
