About Spottedtail Goosefish

The spottedtail goosefish is a Pacific bottom fish recorded chiefly from Baja California to Peru, with a northward extension to the vicinity of Morro Bay, California.

Range and natural history

Juveniles and adults occur on the continental shelf and upper slope. Its eggs are released in floating gelatinous sheets, and the larvae live in the plankton. Early life therefore takes place away from the bottom habitat occupied by larger fish.

Trawl bycatch is a possible source of encounters with this species. A catch record provides useful evidence of presence, but it should retain depth and locality information so it can be distinguished from records of other eastern Pacific goosefishes.
