About Spinycheek Sleeper

The spinycheek sleeper lives near the boundary between river and coast in the western Atlantic. Its range extends from Bermuda, the Bahamas and the southeastern United States to southeastern Brazil.

Range and natural history

Adults use shallow sand or mud bottoms, often in freshwater tributaries of estuaries. Records span a wide salinity range, so its occurrence is not limited to either fresh or salt water alone. It eats insect larvae and pupae, crustaceans such as shrimps and crabs, and small fish.

Food use varies with season and maturity. That changing diet is more informative than describing the fish as having one fixed prey. The sheltered, bottom-associated habitat also helps distinguish its ecology from that of open-water schooling coastal fish.
