About Atlantic Gauvina

Atlantic gauvina is a bottom-living fish of the western Atlantic, ranging from the southeastern United States to Brazil. Its habitats span marine, brackish and fresh waters, so the salinity of a collection site is not enough by itself to identify it.

Habitat

FishBase describes this species primarily from muddy estuarine bottoms. It also occurs in freshwater and in waters saltier than the open sea. That wide salinity tolerance helps explain why records can come from quite different coastal environments within its range.

Identification and records

The scientific name Guavina guavina is the most useful link between records carrying different regional common names. The species has eight dorsal spines, ten dorsal soft rays and nine or ten soft rays in the anal fin. These are technical identification characters for an examined specimen; a distant view of an estuary fish is unlikely to reveal them. The available summary is strongest on habitat and distribution and gives little detail about its reproduction.
