Additional field notes
Blotched snakehead are air-breathing predators of vegetated freshwater habitats.

Respiration and breeding habitat
FishBase identifies this snakehead as an obligate air breather. Air breathing is a normal part of its biology, rather than merely a response to an unusual low-oxygen event. Adults occupy silty, weedy areas of rivers, ponds, and lakes. The species summary describes distinct breeding pairs in shallow freshwater among plants, with reproduction by eggs. This connects its reproductive habitat to the vegetation used in its everyday freshwater setting.

Diet and feeding
The FishTraits compilation records these diet categories for this species: invertebrates or larval fish; larger animal prey (a source category covering fish, crayfish, crabs, or frogs). These are broad categories, not a claim that every individual consumes every example in a category.
Habitat preferences
Reported habitat associations include still-water habitats.
The source records associations with muck, clay or silt, vegetation, organic debris. An association indicates reported use, rather than an exclusive requirement.
Size and recorded longevity
FishTraits reports a maximum total length of 20 centimetres. Some entries use an estimated asymptotic length; this value should not be treated as a certified record catch.
Identification and appearance
Blotched Snakehead is very similar to Northern Snakehead Channa argus, with slight differences in coloration: C. argus has an irregular blotch-like dark marking on the caudal peduncle, whereas C. maculata generally has a complete bar-like dark mark preceded by pale bar-like areas. Additional morpholgical differences include:
Morphological data summarized from Courtenay and Williams (2004).
Native range
Asia: southern China, Hainan, and northern Vietnam (See Courtenay and Williams 2004).
Habitat and ecology
Blotched Snakehead are generally found in shallow, vegetated areas of streams and ponds (Courtenay and Williams 2004). This species is a ambush predator, consuming fish, invertebrates, snakes, frogs, and small mammals (Axelrod et al. 1985; Courtenay and Williams 2004).
Introduction history
Unknown means in other areas. The most likely mechanism is as a released food fish, as it is common in the food trade and rarely available in the aquarium trade (Courtenay and Williams 2004).
Ecological impacts
Unknown. This predatory fish can impact native fauna; it feeds on crustaceans, large insects, frogs and fishes.
