About Tail-jet Frogfish

The tail-jet frogfish is an Indo-Pacific bottom fish recorded from the eastern Indian Ocean to the central Pacific. Its reported localities include Palau, Fiji, Samoa and Hawaii.

Range and natural history

Collections come from habitats as shallow as tide pools and as exposed as outer reef slopes. That range of settings shows why a single reef-depth description would be too narrow. FishBase places it among benthic species, associated with the bottom rather than surface schools.

The species summary lists Christmas Island, Rowley Shoals and the Society Islands among its range limits. A frogfish’s unusual shape is a useful family clue, but species-level identification still requires the particular body and fin characters used in taxonomic accounts.
