About Northern Pearleye

The northern pearleye lives in deep Pacific waters, far below the setting of most shore observations. Records span the Gulf of Alaska and Baja California in the east and Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk in the west.

Range and natural history

FishBase gives a broad recorded depth range, with typical occurrence around 500–1,000 meters. Its elongated body is darker brown above and paler below; the small pectoral fins contrast with expanded pelvic fins. The adipose fin is especially slender.

This species has both male and female reproductive tissue at the same time. It lays eggs, and its larvae live in the plankton. These reproductive details describe a very different environment from the adult deep-water habitat; observations of one life stage do not describe the whole life cycle.
