Why the names differ
The authors compared specimens, pigmentation, and DNA evidence after decades of uncertainty about the northern and southern forms. Their result joins the fish formerly called A. guadalupensis with A. atricaudus. The catalog name is preserved here to keep its records traceable; it is not an assertion that the older species boundary remains uncontested.
Regional observations and identification
The revision discusses fish from Guadalupe and San Benito islands and the Southern California Channel Islands, including observations at San Clemente and Santa Catalina. It illustrates schooling fish and examines a dark blotch on the first dorsal fin. The authors found that older assumptions about pigmentation and separated distributions did not sustain two species. These details make a primary taxonomic account particularly valuable when interpreting photographs or combining occurrence records under the two names.
