Field identification notes
Both small eyes are on the left side. The body narrows to a pointed tail, with the dorsal and anal fins meeting the tail fin. There are no ordinary pectoral fins. The eye side is brown with several dark crossbars, and many individuals have a conspicuous dark patch on the upper gill cover.

Habitat and range notes
The Smithsonian describes sand and mud bottoms and gives a regional range from New York to the Gulf of Mexico, plus the Bahamas and Cuba. Although deeper records exist, its account says it is usually found between one and 30 meters.

Feeding and life-history notes
Small bottom crustaceans, mollusks, and worms are listed as foods. A pointed tail and continuous fin margin separate its general outline from many other flatfishes, but similar tonguefishes need closer comparison. The black cheek patch is valuable evidence when visible, not a reason to ignore the eye position and fins.
